AUSTINMER

Originally known as ‘North Bulli’, Austinmer is thought to have got its name from Henry Austin, a director on the board of the Illawarra Mining Company. Originally settled because of its bountiful coal reserves, by the 1900’s it had become a popular health resort among city dwelling families. It remains one of the most popular beaches with tourists, with a family friendly ocean pool and patrolled beach from September to April. The suburb retains an historical charm, with quirky cafes and boutiques nestled among heritage houses.
