Helensburgh is the Northern most suburb that marks the Northern end of the Illawarra region. Embraced by the Royal National Park to the south, and the Garrawarra State Conservation area to the west, it is an uncrowded, friendly and close-knit community. It is the proud home of the Helensburgh Thistles football club, one of the oldest sporting clubs in Australia, having started in 1895. Today it is home to many shops and business, and while it is growing rapidly, it retains its friendly community feel.
